What home care means

Home care means that support comes to where life happens, rather than someone having to move in order to get support. With 24-hour care, a caregiver moves into the household, gets to know the daily routines and is there whenever something is needed, by day and by night.

The difference from hourly help is continuity: there are no gaps between visits. The difference from a care home is the setting: the home, the daily rhythm, the neighbourhood and familiar habits all remain. For many people, that is exactly why they want to stay at home.

Care, nursing and housework: who does what

In practice, several roles work together. This division of tasks has proved its worth:

  • Everyday care: the caregiver runs the household, cooks, does the shopping, accompanies the person, keeps them active and is attentive around the clock.

  • Medical nursing: wound care, administering medication and similar services are provided by qualified staff from Spitex, the Swiss home nursing service. seniorencare24 coordinates with the local organisation.

  • Family: relatives remain the closest people and the decision-makers, without having to carry round-the-clock responsibility.

  • seniorencare24: selecting the caregiver, contract, travel, briefing, a replacement if the caregiver is unavailable, and a hotline that can be reached around the clock.

Because nursing remains with Spitex, your health insurer’s contribution to nursing care remains in place too.

Where to go from here

If you’d first like to know whether care at home suits your situation, the overview under your needs will help. It describes the most common situations, from relief for the family and the time after a stay in hospital or rehab through to an alternative to a care home.

How an assignment is organised, from the needs assessment to ongoing support, is explained under how it works. All questions about prices, cost coverage and how home care compares with a care home are covered in the funding section.

You’ll find the specific models and prices under 24-hour care at home.

No. Spitex provides medical nursing in visits of limited length. 24-hour care covers everyday life continuously, because the caregiver lives in the household. The two can be combined, and we coordinate them.

A separate room for the caregiver. Major alterations are not usually necessary.

After the initial consultation, we suggest suitable profiles. How quickly things move depends on availability and on requirements such as language. After a hospital stay, we plan the start around the discharge date.
